Abstract
Why do writers fear artificial intelligence? How can that fear be reframed so that writers can view AI as a tool rather than a threat? The fear that many writers have toward AI seems to consist mainly of fears relating to authorship, identity, and writing legitimacy rather than quality of output. Writers fear not only loss of income, but also the social status that often comes with ‘being a writer’. If the public perception is that anyone can be an author with an idea, an internet connection, and enough basic language skills to cobble out a basic prompt, where does that leave the true writers?
Studies on technophobia suggest that fear of emerging technologies is common and often emotionally driven. Research on algorithm aversion shows that people consistently undervalue AI-generated or AI-assisted work, even when they cannot distinguish it from human work. In creative contexts, concerns intensify around voice, craft, and intellectual property. However, scholarship in writing instruction demonstrates that structured, transparent, and ethically guided AI use can enhance learning without undermining human creativity. By situating current AI anxiety within a longer history of technological resistance and applying a cognitive apprenticeship model, this paper proposes practical pathways for fiction writers to overcome resistance and use AI in ways that preserve artistic voice and authorial agency.
Introduction
Writers have always had a complicated relationship with technology. The typewriter was once criticized for being mechanical and impersonal. Word processors were accused of making writing too easy and removing the ‘struggle’ that supposedly made literature meaningful. Now, artificial intelligence has entered the conversation, and many fiction writers react with immediate hostility. In workshops and online communities, AI is often framed as cheating, theft, or even the death of art.
But what if this reaction follows a pattern? What if resistance to AI is not unique, but part of a broader history of technophobia among writers? And what if the tools we fear most could, under certain conditions, actually deepen rather than dilute artistic voice?
How can fiction writers overcome resistance to artificial intelligence and learn how to use it to benefit their work?
I will first establish that technophobia is a documented psychological phenomenon. Then I will examine research on algorithm aversion and perception bias in AI-generated creative work. From there, I will explore how these anxieties manifest specifically in fiction writing and publishing. Finally, I will propose a framework for ethical and human-centered AI integration in writing practice grounded in ethical guidelines that help to preserve authorship and voice.
Background
Technophobia is an irrational fear of advanced technologies.1 The term ‘advanced’ is relative, however, as the word processor, the typewriter, e-books, and the printing press have all had their turns at being the advanced technology that set the writing world aflame. Now that the world around us is inundated with modern technology to the point that even the most entrenched troglodyte cannot completely avoid it, the number of people with technophobia is increasing.2 Studies show that technophobia may be present in up to fifty percent of the population, writers and non-writers alike. 3 This irrational fear is dispersed across all manner of technology, and is not exclusive to artificial intelligence. Technophobia is especially strong when it comes to technology that relates to computing.4
Older adults, those who are sixty-five years of age or older, are especially rife with technophobia compared to younger age groups.5 Other groups that may be inordinately affected by technophobia include females and less educated people.6 Those groups, when totaled, come to much more than fifty percent of the population. We must recognize, however, that not all individuals in the above groups will be affected by technophobia to the same degree, if at all. In addition, those individuals with a high level of neuroticism have a significantly higher risk of advanced technophobia compared with more emotionally stable individuals.7
On the other hand, there are a number of individuals who are drawn to technology easily and, in fact, often gravitate toward it. These individuals can be referred to as technophiles.8 Technophiles often focus on the benefits of technology and focus more on the task than the method of completing the task, therefore, the psychological threat of possible technophobia is minimized in these individuals.9 Technophiles tend to be analytical by nature and have high scores of self-efficacy10. Whether that high self-efficacy comes from advanced technical skill or if the openness to learning those skills comes from an inherently high self-efficacy falls into a nature versus nurture category and may not be a determinable distinction.
Literature Review
People often prefer AI-generated content versus human-made content when they are unaware of the source, but when the source is known, humans tend to view purely AI-generated content with hesitation.11 They tend to believe that AI-generated content lacks effort and creativity compared to human-made works.12 This reflects algorithm aversion, which, unlike technophobia, reflects a rationalized sense of distrust, often gained due to experience.
However, when people are not told whether creative properties are generated by artificial intelligence or by humans, they are often unable to discern the difference.13 This is interesting because there is a clear penalty to labeling content as being AI-generated. For creative writing in particular, assessments of written works are consistently lower when it is disclosed that the work was written with AI, or even with the help of AI, instead of just by a human writer.14 This is a clear indication of either technophobia or algorithm aversion, depending upon the degree of rationality and emotion that an individual has regarding the assessment.
Human assistants, however, are given a higher regard and receive credit for higher levels of authorship compared to artificial intelligence when they give the principal author of the piece the same level of help.15 The type of help that an author may receive from humans varies. A human developmental editor can take rough work and change it to a degree that makes the original barely recognizable, or a line editor might take a flabby narrative and change it into something that sparkles and sings as it is read. This sort of editing is common in the publishing world, and according to this research, even a far smaller degree of authorial help from artificial intelligence can cause a reader to lose confidence in the author because they wrote in a way that is perceived to be less creative and ‘easier.’
In addition to hands-on editing, humans may also assist writers by helping them brainstorm, by beta-reading the finished work, or by acting as a subject matter expert or research assistant. All of these roles are commonly accepted in the writing world, and all of them can be undertaken by artificial intelligence to varying degrees. Yet the perception of artificial intelligence dimming authorial light still holds. This may be due in part to ignorance by non-writers about how writing actually works.
Individuals often prefer humans for services, particularly services that they pay for, in part because of the perception that robots or artificial intelligence expend minimal effort. For creative works in particular, more creativity is ascribed to what is perceived as a higher level of effort.16 This is a skewed perspective. A highly-skilled writer who is adept at craft and who has been studying writing for decades may labor over a work, writing and rewriting, and taking great periods of time to write even a short story. We might equate this turtle-slow writer to Marcel Proust, who is widely known in writing circles for his plodding pace. On the other hand, there is Stephen King, who has revealed that when he is writing, he generates a whopping two thousand words a day. Who is more creative? Proust, who agonized over his work, or King, who seems to write easily, but who generates worlds that most never dream of?
Yet we seem to be stuck with the perspective, from the non-creative, that effort equals creativity, and therefore regard. It must be noted that when assessments for creative works are meted, the degree of AI assistance matters for degrees of authorship.17
This idea does not take into account the young genius who writes easily and well, with little or no study in the craft, or the analytical plodder who writes via tropes and uses lackluster language yet sells millions of novels per year to fans who revere his work. The idea of equating effort with creativity is a non-sequitur. Art and creativity are highly variable and cannot be quantified in that manner.
Yet it stands that there is a ‘disclosure penalty’ when revealing that a writer has used AI to enhance his work18, whether the assistance comes in the form of brainstorming, critique, or editing, even if the writer has written every word of the rough draft without AI assistance. There is an increasing demand for transparency by creators who use artificial intelligence to augment their work.19 This can be troublesome for writers who might lean toward the technophile end of the spectrum, yet who use AI in such a way that they are maintaining full authorship of their work. The disclosure penalty and lack of perceived regard from readers may be enough to either prevent writers from using AI in any capacity or to encourage them not disclose its use, thereby continuing to promote the stigma of AI in writing.
Methodology
In some cases, instead of hiding the use of AI, a writer might become completely transparent about its use. Showing the steps involved in prompting and iterating a creative work may help to rid the public of the idea that the use of artificial intelligence completely negates authorship in works that involve human-AI collaboration.20 Writers can show how AI was used, and how they were guided in their interactions with AI by their creativity, showing the full gamut involved in iterating AI-generated portions of work. This level of transparency can potentially mitigate the current public perception of AI use and offer insights to other creatives, allowing them to move forward in their experimentation with a tool that can bolster creativity rather than degrade it, and save hours of work in the process.
Normalizing the concept of human-AI collaboration in writing may extend to AI uses that lie beyond the creative. It has been shown that job applicants resist the use of AI-driven recruitment, but are more open to it when AI is used as an assistant to a human decision maker. As populations evolve and older technophobics are naturally replaced with younger technophiles, as AI use gains a foothold in day-to-day activities, and as we as a society learn how to harness this powerful tool, we can begin to replace the stigma of AI use in creativity with the acceptance of AI use as a collaborator.
Collaboration is key. We cannot allow AI to replace creatives, and we wouldn’t want to, regardless of the medium they use to express themselves. Human creativity is an outlet to convey how the writer or artist sees the world around them, how they relate to others, and a bounty of other human-only areas of meaning-making that come from lived experience that AI can only imitate poorly. AI writing is flat and empty. There is no true meaning behind its words. There never will be. Artificial intelligence needs a human to channel it, guide the outcome, and be the ultimate decision maker in the final product.
Research shows that how AI is framed can play a deciding role in how it is perceived.21 Studies show that humans distrust suggestions from AI compared to those from humans, even when the suggestions from AI are superior.22 This effect seems to be most severe when the suggestions are subjective, rather than objective, as they would be when used in any creative work. But, as people are slowly becoming more familiar with AI, and as AI is becoming more powerful, there seems to be a beginning of a shift from AI aversion to appreciation23 in some areas. Individuals seemed to gain an appreciation of AI when shown that AI can perform a specific task at a higher success rate than that individual.24 It has been found that once an individual appreciates the level of quality that AI can produce, they resent the use of AI less.25 This is particularly true in cases where the use of AI is utilitarian.26
Results
AI is still in its infancy, and there are a variety of opinions on when it should be used, how it should be used, and how it should be credited. Some have suggested that an AI tool should be listed as a co-author, but even if it makes large contributions to a work, no AI tool can consent to publish work.27 Ethics of AI use are debated and in some places seem to conflict.
Many writers fear the impact AI will have on the future of writing and that it may steal income from human writers.28 Some have ethical issues with using AI tools that have been trained on copyrighted work. There is a widespread, yet unfounded, belief that AI only copies the work of others.
There is an increasing use of AI to produce novels, and some publishers are overrun with AI content.29 Publishers, however, often consider themselves to be the literary taste-makers and eschew the use of AI-only written works, as does this author. It is important to realize that as AI continues to play a greater role in writing, we need to make it clear that AI should serve as a writing assistant, but never as a replacement for human writers.30
Human editors play a pivotal role in developing modern fiction.31 They must manage not only the manuscripts they work with, but also the authors, so they require both strong writing craft skills and people management skills. This is an area where AI falls short. AI can give writing critiques that sound credible, but it cannot offer high-level assessments of work that is more nuanced, literary writing in particular. When given free rein to edit a written work, AI often makes drastic changes and flattens an author’s voice. However, when given simple and direct tasks, AI can correct simple issues without problem.32
Analysis
Despite the drawbacks, the fears, and the potential creative risks of incorporating the use of AI into creative writing, the boon to writers is the ability to offload the writing tasks that the individual writer finds tedious and to use the time gained to focus more fully upon the core tenets of the work, authorial voice, and emotional truth. Studies have shown that generative AI can be useful in the initial stages of developing a story, although works developed mostly via artificial intelligence become all the weaker for it.33 In light of this, brainstorming with an AI tool, organizing disparate thoughts into an outline, using a specific AI chat as a fiction notetaking app, and solving logical inconsistencies within a storyline may be some of the best uses for artificial intelligence within fiction writing. Critique for revision can also be a good use of AI, provided that the writer uses AI feedback cautiously, in a way that improves the work but does not flatten authorial voice.
The use of AI tools as partial substitutions for writing groups, line editors, secretaries, and researchers is burgeoning and will likely continue to grow. AI is still in its infancy, and as these tools continue to improve, usage cases may potentially be expanded. AI is already adept at offering quick feedback, catching grammatical errors, and assisting in organization. Rather than replacing human collaborators, they can fill gaps when time, money, or community are limited, and can give writers a sense of support on demand. Over time, using AI alongside human collaborators will change how writers create and will blend human judgement with machine efficiency in ways that reshape the creative process, and potentially even how stories are told.
AI can be incorporated into creative writing instruction in ways that maintain authorship and voice, while upholding creative ethics as well.34 Many instructors fear that the use of AI may lead to dishonesty among students and students taking shortcuts via artificial intelligence, which may compromise learning. In some cases, that may happen. Dishonesty among students has existed as long as there have been students, and it will continue. Students will be using AI to help with assignments in the future, just as students in the past used calculators when they were forbidden. However, there are two points to consider. First, the majority of students are not dishonest in their work, just as the majority of citizens are not dishonest in day-to-day life. That is a characteristic that lies on the smaller end of the Bell curve. Second, promoting ethical use of AI in writing classrooms may mitigate the possibility of students using AI tools in unethical ways. Legitimizing a tool often removes much of the allure of its use from the type of student who is psychologically drawn to using dishonest shortcuts.
In order for a creative writing piece to be ethically written, it is important to remember that, regardless of the amount of AI assistance used in brainstorming, editorial critique, and the like, a writer must write their own words. A writer who relies too heavily on AI will lose skill over time. In addition, the final work will be missing something crucial that only a human writer can give. Most readers gravitate toward particular writing voices. Generative AI may have good grammar and technical skill, but its written works will fall flat compared to even a less skilled writer who has a defined human literary voice that shines through.
There is a balance that must be established between the person who writes a prompt and expects ChatGPT to output a bestselling novel and an experienced writer who eschews artificial intelligence completely. Someone who does not do the writing is not a writer. A prompt is not art. Yet rejecting AI entirely denies the metamorphosis of the modern writing process. When the writer wields technology with intention and uses it to shape their art rather than create it, a beautiful collaboration can ensue. True art still demands the human touch, and that is something that no algorithm can replicate.
Conclusions
Technology is advancing, and as a result, society is changing. Writing is hardly the only profession that will be impacted by artificial intelligence. In time, many professions may be eradicated by AI, and many more may be changed in noticeable ways. The proliferation of artificial intelligence may be the most profound leap in technological history. The way we see fiction writing is changing due to the mere existence of AI tools, and if the way we view writing is changing, that is a way of changing writing itself.35 The key to maintaining agency over these changes is to harness the use of AI instead of ignoring or fearing its capabilities. There will, of course, be writers who never use AI, and there are already many who attempt to create bestsellers via a prompt alone. The latter group will fail, and the former group is only shortchanging themselves. The writers who will thrive in the future will be those who walk a middle ground, harnessing the best aspects of AI and holding the rest at bay. These middle-ground writers will follow in the footsteps of the legions of writers before them who adapted to the typewriter, word processors, spell-checkers, and all of the other writing tools that were originally held at arm’s length and are now commonplace. Artificial intelligence will take the same path.
